In a parking lot next to the Lord of the Streets church in midtown Houston, Tyrone Minnieweather writes in a notebook.
Minnieweather just left the hospital after his third bypass surgery in less than a year. The middle-aged man suffers from neuropathy in one of his feet, still has staples up the inside of one of his legs, and says he’s fed up with being on the streets.
A decade ago, Minnieweather headed south from Illinois to Texas in search of a better life. He quickly became acquainted with the unpredictability of homelessness in the southern city.
“This is a bipolar city, you know. Bipolar people, weather, roads and animals — yes, roads,” he said, speaking in a distinctive cadence. Minnieweather wrote rap songs when he was in Illinois, and is now writing poetry.
Soon after arriving in Houston, he found himself in a homeless shelter.
“People become homeless for different reasons,” he said.
“Most people associate homelessness with drugs and alcohol, and that ain’t true. You know, that’s a stereotype,” he said.
“You have people that [are homeless] because of divorces, because of child support, because of this, because of that.”
