100 years ago on this day, June 20th, 1925, Fred Hall made his first records for OKeh under the giveaway pseudonym Fred "Sugar" Hall and his Sugar Babies. Although they did not feature the same lineup of musicians that his band would perhaps become known best for upon its reorganization in 1927, this was nonetheless a significant moment in Hall's career.
I don't have any of these acoustic red OKehs, partially because they do not appeal to me very much musically and also due to the fact they seem to turn up even less than his electric yellow label OKehs. My only interest in them is their attachment to Fred Hall.
But nonetheless, today I present one of Fred Hall's earlier Sugar Babies recordings, done here for the Sears label Silvertone as the Tin Pan Paraders. A semi-successful number, retitled somewhat (but not beyond recognition), gets a stellar treatment, with D'Arcy, Grosso, Hall and company working their magic on what is one of my favorite of their Gennett sessions. Enjoy!
