Musical Dodecahedron + Euclidean Sequencer
Two browser-based instruments, built from scratch, playing together in real time.
A regular dodecahedron has 12 pentagonal faces — one for each pitch class in Western music. Each face is assigned a root note and a modal scale (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian). Where three faces meet at a vertex, the app calculates the intersection of their scales — the notes they share in common. The entire shape becomes a map of harmonic relationships you can see, hear, and navigate in 3D.
The Dodecahedron has three sound modes: Arpeggio — staggered chord tones, speed adjustable per face; Drone — indefinite sustain with crossfade between chords; Pulse — short rhythmic stabs, perfect for sequenced triggers
Three distinct synth tones give each face its own character: Warm — fat sine oscillator through a lowpass filter, soft and pad-like; Piano — FM synthesis with adjustable harmonicity and modulation, bell-like and clean; Pluck — fast-decay triangle oscillator, harp-like with tunable brightness and ring time
Every face has independent controls for bass note, chord/bass volume, octave, chord inversion (root through 3rd), and tone-specific parameters. The sound design possibilities across 12 faces are enormous.
The 3D dodecahedron is fully interactive — drag to rotate freely in any direction, including z-axis spin (two-finger twist on mobile, shift+drag on desktop). Clicking a face in the sidebar triggers a smooth animated rotation that brings that face forward. The vertices glow based on how many shared notes exist between their three adjacent faces.
A display panel lets you dial in the visual aesthetic in real time — glow intensity, opacity, color saturation, and hue shift — so the instrument looks as good as it sounds.
The Euclidean Sequencer generates Euclidean rhythms — mathematically optimal distributions of beats across steps. It sends drum patterns on MIDI channel 10 along with MIDI clock, which the Dodecahedron receives to trigger pulse and arpeggio steps in perfect sync. The two apps communicate over virtual MIDI (IAC Driver on Mac), turning the browser into a synchronized multi-instrument performance environment.
Eureka Mode: Can't decide on a configuration? Hit the lightbulb button and the app uses a simulated annealing algorithm to generate a complete 12-face assignment optimized for rich vertex intersections — every root, mode, bass note, octave, inversion, and tone preset randomized but musically coherent. You can lock it to a single tone preset for a unified sound, or let it mix all three.
