Have you ever wondered how cannons work?
Cannons, powerful weapons used for centuries in warfare, operate on straightforward principles. They consist of a hollow barrel and a chamber for the explosive charge. The cannon is loaded with gunpowder, followed by a projectile like a cannonball, which is tightly packed using a ramrod to ensure pressure builds properly.
To fire, a fuse is placed in the touch hole leading to the gunpowder. Once lit, the gunpowder ignites, creating hot gas that rapidly expands, generating extreme pressure. This pressure forces the cannonball out of the barrel at high speed, giving the cannon its destructive force and range.
Cannons could fire solid cannonballs, grapeshot (like a giant shotgun blast), or explosive shells. Early cannons were used to destroy fortifications and large targets, while more advanced artillery emerged over time with better accuracy and power.
Operating a cannon required a team of soldiers to load, aim, fire, and clean the barrel after each shot. Cannons have played a significant role in military history, evolving into modern artillery but still relying on similar mechanics.
