In today’s video, we’re taking a look at an exciting new release from Origin Effects - the RevivalTREM!

Origin claim the RevivalTREM to be the first ever pedal to faithfully recreate power tube bias tremolo, the sought-after effect found in a handful of classic amps from the late ‘50s and early ‘60s.

More than just a tremolo pedal, the RevivalTREM also functions as an amp-in-a-box style overdrive. Using the same technology found in the RevivalDRIVE and RevivalDRIVE Compact pedals, Origin Effects have designed an all-analogue, transistor-based circuit based on the rich, chewy tone of a 1962 Brown Fender Deluxe.

The pedal has two footswitches, allowing you to use the drive circuit on its own, or with the tremolo circuit engaged. Clean tube amp tones are an option with the drive circuit engaged, as the drive control acts more like the volume on a non-master volume tube amp would.

If you’re familiar with the RevivalDRIVE Compact, which I reviewed in 2019, you will probably notice that the RevivalTREM features the same ‘post-drive EQ’ controls. Those controls including: a three-way selector switch that gives you two separate EQ’s to work with depending on the type of amp you’re plugging into, as well as a power-amp mode, and the ‘ADJ’ (adjust) control, which acts as a filter you can use to fine tune your high-end frequency response when plugging the pedal into an amp and using EQ1 or EQ2.

As for the tremolo circuit itself, bias tremolo is a very dynamic effect that responds to your picking dynamics. Pick harder and you’ll find that the modulating effect of the tremolo backs off. Let chords and notes ring out and you’ll hear that modulation gradually come back into your signal.

Two switchable wave shapes - sine and full - allow you to choose from a smooth, rounded tremolo, or something with more of a choppy feel.

Next to the speed control you will find a MULTI switch - a three-way selector switch allowing you to multiply the speed of the tremolo, giving you greater control of the overall tempo. Speaking of tempo - there’s also an input for an external tap tempo switch, should you wish to control the pedal with one.
