MATT FINNIS: It’s hard to believe AFL SportsReady is having its 20th birthday. It was 18 years ago when I was a trainee. I was working in surf lifesaving and doing the trainee program with AFL SportsReady and a few days on the job. My memories are that we all used to come together for the training and people like Joel Bowden and Chris Naish and Danny Morgan who played for the bombers and is now doing a career in Journalism. You came together with all these likeminded people who are passionate about sport and finding a career with some learning from a diverse range of people with on the job training and learning about carving out a career in sports. I feel very privileged there’s a lot of people that would love to forge a career in this industry it has many rewards and I think for young people you need recognise you need to get in from the bottom and learn new things on the job and when you combine that with some training and some education and when you combine all this with qualifications and on the job experience then you’re setting yourself up for success. That’s just a terrific initiative when Kevin Sheedy, Simon Creane and Bill Kelty, the founding fathers of AFL SportsReady I could imagine they would be so proud.
