In this video, I take a first look at the Tilta Xeno Top Handle, the variant with 1/4"-20 screw mount and locating pins and draw attention to the unexpected problem of its mounting specifications.
It matches the rest of Tilta's Xeno range of cages and handles; in this case a very striking black and metallic green, with great attention to detail, practical fixtures and good ergonomics.
However, the mount deviates from the ARRI standard for hardware mounts (3/8ths-16 screw with 1mm locating pins either side, 15mm centre-to-centre) by using pins of 1.2mm in diameter...
So whilst it appears to be compatible with standard monitor mounts including those on their Xeno and other cages, and those by other manufactures like SmallRig or Kondor Blue, it will not fit.
I contacted Tilta support, and they admitted it's designed for a "different mounting system" but couldn't explain more and asked me to provide more details and hence this humorous video.
The other mounting options are NATO, cold shoe, or dual 1/4"-20 mounts and I'll be exchanging this one for one of those.
I hope the video will amuse you, and save someone time and money. Check my previous Tilta Xeno cage reviews for more and if you know what the mystery mount is, please drop a comment.
