Roxelana is the most influential woman in the history of the Ottoman Empire. According to legend, she was kidnapped by Tatars in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and sold at a slave market in Istanbul, where she was given to Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The young woman enchanted the Sultan, who nicknamed her Hurrem, meaning "the Laughing One." Another of Suleiman's concubines, Mahidevran, became jealous and insulted Hurrem, tearing her face, hair, and dress. Eventually, Hurrem was invited to the Sultan's chamber but refused to appear in such a state. The Sultan summoned Hurrem and listened to her. When he questioned Mahidevran, she claimed authority over the other concubines and admitted punishing Hurrem. The Sultan, angered, made Hurrem his favorite concubine. Many years later, Hurrem officially married Suleiman, a nearly impossible feat at that time. She engaged with foreign ambassadors, corresponded with rulers, and served as her husband's chief advisor, coinciding with a golden age for the Ottoman Empire.
