Washington State Ferries (WSF), the largest ferry system in the United States, boasts a broad and interesting fleet, of which the MV Sealth holds a significant place. Named after Chief Sealth (more commonly known as Chief Seattle), the indigenous leader of the Suquamish and Duwamish tribes of the Pacific Northwest, the MV Sealth is a stalwart of the WSF system. She was launched in 1982 and, after 40 years of service, she continues to run the Fauntleroy to Southworth route, connecting West Seattle with the Kitsap Peninsula.
The MV Sealth is a Super-class ferry with a maximum capacity of 144 vehicles and 2000 passengers. It spans 382 feet in length with a beam of 73 feet and a draft of 18 feet. Not only does it accommodate vehicles and passengers, but also bicycles, and it is equipped with modern amenities such as a passenger lounge, a cafeteria, and an outdoor viewing deck. The MV Sealth's two powerful engines allow for a top speed of 18 knots, smoothly cutting across the Puget Sound and offering breathtaking views of the mountainous skyline.
The history of the Washington State Ferry system, including the MV Sealth, is fascinating. In the early 20th century, privately-owned ferries began operating in the Puget Sound. However, in 1951, when these private operators were facing bankruptcy, the state of Washington took over the ferry service. The newly created Washington Toll Bridge Authority (later renamed Washington State Ferries) continued the existing operations and started expanding the fleet and the routes.
The 1960s and 1970s saw a period of rapid growth, with new vessels added and new terminals built. This included the Super-class ferries, like the MV Sealth, in the 1980s, built for their large vehicle and passenger capacity.
Over the decades, the Washington State Ferries system has played a significant role in connecting communities, facilitating commerce, and promoting tourism in the region. Despite facing challenges such as aging infrastructure and increased demand, it continues to provide critical transportation services for residents and visitors alike, with the MV Sealth representing the resilience and enduring value of this iconic fleet.
