India is now among the world’s most unequal countries, with most GDP gains reaching the top 10%, deepening income and wealth gaps. This extreme inequality has stalled mass consumption, hurt private investment, and fueled social and political tensions.
Despite rapid economic growth, millions still lack nutritious food, quality healthcare, education, housing, and essential services. Public spending remains far below what’s needed to secure social and economic rights. Crucial investments for climate change adaptation and a green transition are also severely lacking, leaving vulnerable communities at greater risk. Inequality is slowing India’s progress.
