Arkansas produces nearly 50% of the entire U.S. rice supply across more than 1.5 million acres, making the Arkansas Delta the center of American rice production. Harvest runs from August through October, when specialized combines equipped with track systems move across flooded and saturated fields designed for rice cultivation.

Because freshly harvested rice contains high moisture levels, speed is critical after harvest. Wet rice moves immediately from the field to a massive regional network of 200+ drying and storage facilities operating around the clock during peak harvest. These facilities use continuous-flow grain dryers to reduce moisture from 18–20% at harvest to a safe storage level of 12–13%, preventing spoilage and preserving grain quality.

Each drying facility can process between 1 and 5 million bushels, allowing enormous volumes of rice to be stabilized within hours of harvest. Once dried, the rice moves through an integrated logistics system that connects storage elevators, rice mills, and export terminals.

Much of the crop travels via the Mississippi River barge network, one of the most efficient grain transportation systems in the world. Barges carry Arkansas rice to major Gulf export ports such as Houston and New Orleans, linking the Delta’s harvest directly to global food markets.
