New Jersey business valuations expert, Robert Bonavito, discusses how to value a company. As an example, he shows a bag of $100 million Kennedy dollars and asks "how much you give for that bag?". It should be a $100 million – the fair market value. Now let’s say a company earns $100 million at the end of Year 1, another $100 million at the end of Year 2 and another $100 million at the end of Year 3. Would you give $300 million for that? No, because you have to factor in cash flows at the end of the year. Assuming a 6% discount, you should pay around $250 million for the cash flow. Valuation is complex because you have to factor in cash flows and discounts. In a nutshell, look at the cash flows. There are so many textbooks that make this concept so complex, but according to New Jersey forensic accounting expert, Robert Bonavito, it’s really not that difficult.
