The Keystone pipeline transports oil from Alberta to refineries in Illinois and Oklahoma. An extension pipeline, Keystone XL, would extend the system to refineries in Texas. Keystone XL faces strong opposition from environmentalists and ranchers. Keystone XL would pass near the Ogallala Aquifer, which provides water for drinking and agriculture for eight states from South Dakota to Texas.
