This is probably my favourite coin at the moment. A beautiful silver stater from Poseidonia, a Greek city in southern Italy. A magnificent bull on the reverse, and Poseidon himself on the obverse. And yes, I have again switched reverse and obverse. What decides what is obverse and what is reverse you ask? It is complicated. I will post a video about this subject.
LUCANIA. Poseidonia. c. 470-445 BC. AR Stater. Obv: ΠΟMES / Poseidon striding to right, his left arm outstretched, brandishing trident with his right hand and with chlamys draped over his shoulders. Rev: ΠΟMES / Bull standing left. 8.05 g. 19 mm. HGC 1, 1151. HN Italy 1114. Ex. Leu 17/90; Hirsch 97 (1976), 20a. From the San Giovani Ionico hoard (CH IX, 599) found in 1971.
Nicely toned. Struck from a slightly worn obverse die, otherwise, very fine.
Poseidonia was a major ancient Greek city on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Magna Graecia (southern Italy). It was around 600 BC that Greeks from Sybaris founded the city named Poseidonia, from the name of Poseidon, the god of the sea.
