The Impella device is used to treat cardiogenic shock and to protect the patient during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
The Impella is implanted in the left ventricle and propulses blood from the LV to the aorta, off loading the left ventricle.
The catheters used can have a size/flow range from 3.5 lpm to 5.5 lpm.
Additionally, there is now a right ventricular catheter that can assist patients with RV failure.
This device is considered the gold standard for treating cardiogenic shock unless extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is required.
