Hail, Holy Light is a Christian hymn rooted in one of the earliest hymns of the church, originally written in Latin by St. Ambrose of Milan (c. 340–397). The English version most commonly sung today was translated by John Chandler in 1837.
The hymn praises Christ as the eternal Light of God, celebrating His divine glory, truth, and life-giving presence. Because of its ancient origins, it is often associated with morning worship, emphasizing renewal, holiness, and the light of Christ breaking into the world.
