The University Grants Commission (UGC) notified the Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions Regulations, 2026 on January 13, 2026. These regulations aim to replace the 2012 guidelines with a stricter, legally enforceable framework to eliminate caste-based and other forms of discrimination on Indian campuses. However, on January 29, 2026, the Supreme Court of India stayed the regulations, ordering them to be kept in abeyance while the 2012 Regulations continue to operate in the interim.
