They Knew Nicotine Was Addictive — 40 Years Before Congress

Описание: Seven tobacco CEOs swore under oath that nicotine was not addictive. Their own labs had confirmed the opposite since 1963.

Brown and Williamson's internal memo — written by researcher Addison Yeaman in June 1963 — stated nicotine was addictive "in the same sense as hard drugs." It was immediately buried inside a law firm archive under attorney-client privilege. It stayed there for over two decades.

A paralegal named Merrell Williams smuggled roughly 4,000 pages out of that archive in 1994. Those pages became the Brown and Williamson Cigarette Papers — documenting suppressed addiction research, ammonia-chemistry nicotine manipulation, and forty years of coordinated industry denial. The 1998 Master Settlement Agreement ultimately cost Philip Morris, R.J. Reynolds, Brown and Williamson, and Lorillard $246 billion. Judge Gladys Kessler's 1,683-page RICO ruling later confirmed a decades-long conspiracy. The MSA remains the largest civil litigation settlement in U.S. history.

If you follow corporate investigations, or if you've watched videos on the Vioxx recall, the Boeing MCAS cover-up, or channels like Patrick Boyle, LegalEagle, Coffeezilla, or Real Engineering, this case belongs in your feed.

The Cigarette Papers became the founding blueprint for every major internal-document cover-up case that followed — and the MSA set the template for state Medicaid cost-recovery litigation used in the opioid crisis decades later.
