For Black History Month, FOX 5’s Denise Dillon highlights the major efforts to preserve Doc’s Café, Roswell’s first Black-owned business. Instead of being demolished, the 1950s landmark is undergoing a meticulous "deconstruction" process to be rebuilt and memorialized.
Originally opened by Samuel “Doc” and Hattie Stafford, the café served as a vital gathering place during segregation and a cornerstone of the Groveway neighborhood. Crews are carefully dismantling the structure piece by piece—cataloging original lumber, windows, and doors—to safeguard the heritage of the city's first Black neighborhood for future generations.
