Standard procedure. Scan everything, log everything, and under no circumstances attempt to activate anything that glows, hums, speaks in a dead language, or smells faintly of something that science has not yet named.

They had found a notebook.

Not just any notebook, mind you. This was a leather-bound, weathered, practically ancient tome covered in faded script, diagrams of lightning rods, equations that mixed chemistry with what appeared to be theology, and margin notes that ranged from "brilliant!" to "perhaps do not attempt indoors" to "the neighbors are asking questions again." On the cover, embossed in gold that had mostly flaked away but was still legible to anyone with patience and a magnifying glass, were the words:
