As we look back on the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, today, we pay a visit to Hometime. The show as produced by the team at WHYY in Philadelphia.
Hometime was in many ways, the original home improvement show on television, and what a wonderful show it was. For those of us who watch home improvement shows on cable television today, and there are literally hundreds of them on various cable channels including the big one, HGTV, we can thank Hometime, This Old House and others on PBS decades ago that helped paved the way.
Hometime started back on November 1, 1986 and host Dean Johnson has been with the show all these many years. The ended its run (new shows) recently on January 30, 2016, but the show can still be seen in reruns on various PBS local affiliates.
Dean Johnson had five different co-hosts over the decades, but our personal favorite amongst our Television Vanguard staff is the wonderful JoAnne 'JoJo' Liebeler. JoJo co-hosted the show from 1987 to 1992.
We've selected a couple of video clips from the Dean-JoJo era to share here on YouTube. Both clips are from 1992, and this one here is indeed one of our favorites - it is about 'The Home of the Future', and is quite fun to look back, all the way back, to the post war 1950s to get an idea of what the home of the future might look like, and then get yet another view from the early 1990s as to what had become, and what was still to become leading into the current time of the 21st Century.
Enjoy! Part 2 coming tomorrow.
