The Soldier Who Won the Prairie
Written by Keith Cearlock
This song tells the story behind the land where my family farm stands near Becks Creek southeast of Pana, Illinois. Long before the farms, coal mines, railroads, and greenhouses that later shaped this part of Illinois, the land was part of the vast American prairie.
The ground traces its origin to a military bounty land warrant issued to Hiram H. Purcell, a corporal in Company A of the Second Tennessee Volunteers who served in the Second Seminole War in Florida. In 1850 the United States government granted veterans land warrants for their service, and Purcell received Warrant No. 18052, eventually redeemed for eighty acres in Section 35 of Pana Township.
What began as open prairie surveyed by federal land crews eventually became farmland along Becks Creek, part of the story told in my book Becks Creek Road: Songs, Stories, and Secrets of the Pana Prairie.
“The Soldier Who Won the Prairie” is a musical tribute to those early soldiers whose service helped shape the settlement of the American frontier.
