My entry for the Fall 2025 12 Story Composing Competition. Like most of my music, this piece started with a motif. In this case, the main motif is a three note phrase comprised of a descending 5th and an ascending minor 2nd and is what the rest of the piece is built off of. The piece starts with a melancholy intro where the detective is mourning the deceased. The hi-hats and upright bass enter as he starts looking for clues. Once he's found what he's looking for, the gravity of the situation sets in as a sweeping orchestral score lays out the investigation that's before him. This transitions into determination to find the killer as the drums and other big band instruments accompany the strings and take us to the big finale that could kick off a noir detective story.
