Amalfi Cathedral is a medieval Roman Catholic cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo, the town of Amalfi, Italy. It is dedicated to Saint Andrew the Apostle, whose relics are kept here.
Begun in the 9th and 10th centuries, it was completed and redecorated several times, superimposing Arab-Norman, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and finally a new Norman-Arab-Byzantine façade in the 19th century. The cathedral includes the adjacent 9th-century Basilica of the Crucifix. From the basilica, a staircase leads to the Crypt of Saint Andrew, where his relics are kept.
We first visited the Cloister of Paradise, built in the 13th century, a magnificent example of medieval architecture, with elegant columns and rounded arches and an interior garden, originally intended as a cemetery for the nobility.
Then we entered the Diocesan Museum, which displays many of the treasures of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Amalfi-Cava de' Tirreni. The Museum is housed in the Basilica of the Crucifix, originally the Cathedral Church, whose origin dates back to the year 596.
We continued down to The Crypt, the true heart of Amalfi, because here are kept the relics of the body of Saint Andrew, the first disciple of Jesus.
We went up and finally visited the central nave of the Cathedral, where we admired: a crucifix from the 13th century (in a focal point of the nave), painting of the Martyrdom of St. Andrew,a (above the altar), Egyptian granite columns, the High Altar formed from the sarcophagus of Archbishop Pietro Capuano and Mother-of-pearl cross (brought from the Holy Land).
