The peace walls in Belfast are a series of separation barriers that represent one of the most visible and complex legacies of "The Troubles." Though they were originally built as temporary measures over 50 years ago, many still stand today as functional structures and significant cultural landmarks.
Current Status (2026)
While there was a government goal to remove all peace walls by 2023, that target was not met due to the sensitive nature of the security concerns and community consent required.
Total Barriers: There are still more than 60 barriers across the city, stretching a combined length of roughly 34 kilometers (21 miles).
Active Gates: Many walls still have "Peace Gates" (like those on Lanark Way or Northumberland Street) that are locked every night (usually around 6:30 PM or 8:00 PM) and reopened in the morning.
Recent Removals: Progress is slow but ongoing. For example, in late 2024 and 2025, sections of walls in West and North Belfast (like those near Alexandra Park) have been slated for removal or "re-imaging" to create shared community spaces.
