This is Part 7 of my series From Paradise to Fear.
I was born and raised as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and believed it was the only truth for 58 years. Like many children in the organization, I grew up learning the Bible through Watchtower publications, including "My Book of Bible Stories".
But the illustrations in those books left a deep impression on me as a child. Some of those images stayed with me for years and contributed to nightmares and intense anxiety that I struggled with growing up.
Today I am a professional artist, and looking back at these publications through the lens of art and visual design led me to start asking new questions.
One thing that stood out to me was that the artwork in these books was created in the 1970s, long before digital tools were even possible. That realization led me to carefully examine every illustration in the 1978 edition of "My Book of Bible Stories".
As I began studying the images more closely, patterns emerged that I had never noticed before, but as a child, I felt that something was wrong. When those patterns are compared with the wording of the stories and other Watchtower publications, it raises questions I never thought I would ask about the only truth I had ever known.
This video is part of my ongoing series “From Paradise to Fear,” where I revisit these childhood publications with fresh eyes — examining the artwork, the messaging, and the emotional impact they can have on young minds.
The Bible deserves careful and thoughtful study.
I’m exploring how these stories and images were presented to children and how they shaped my understanding as I grew up.
Each episode will reveal several of these images, alongside the organization’s own words from their magazines and books—contradictions, flip-flops, and teachings that simply don’t align with the unchanging Word of God.
Because the Bible doesn’t change.
Truth doesn’t fear examination.
And any group that forbids research outside its own walls has something to hide.
So why are Jehovah’s Witnesses told not to research?
Why are we told to “wait on the Governing Body” instead of thinking for ourselves?
And how did art—something meant to teach children—become a tool of fear and control?
Join me as I peel back the layers of the Watchtower’s imagery, its history, and its contradictions—one page at a time.
I pray you will consider,
With so much luv,
Lorie
