Hello! Thank you for checking out my YouTube channel. If you like gear demos and supporting DIY small biz builders, hit that subscribe button and leave a comment. Many thanks!
In this video I'm demoing a completely rebuilt 385, done to the 8399/Canadian EL84s + EF86 Filmosound circuit.
NEXT, the "8399 to EL84 + EF86" 385.
First off, there are so many model numbers... but where this differs from the "Filmosound 385" is (mainly) that it has an EF86 in V1 and EL84 output tubes rather than 6V6s and a 5879 in V1. This amp is an example of a chassis that came to me needing "the works", and so rather than spinning wheels servicing and chasing hum, hisses and pops, I gutted the amp, and wired it up following the 8399 schematic. The modification process involved the addition of an aluminum plate to adapt the chassis to additional 9-pin sockets for the EZ81 rectifier and EL84 power tubes (vintage RCA 7189s in this amp).
The amp features the original aluminum chassis and Schumacher transformer set. The transformers are evidently (obviously) a big part of the magic of these amps, and what tie them to their heritage as "poor man's tweed amps". I also feature carbon comp resistors in my amps in the plate load positions (metal film in cathode/grid & metal oxide in power), and Mallory 150s everywhere else. I use F&T & Nichicon or Vishay electrolytics, Switchcraft jacks, and Alpha/Bourns/Switchcraft pots.
The guitar (going straight in) used in this video is my custom parts telecaster with Kent Armstrong PAF (neck) and tele single coil (bridge).
Thanks for watching!
