Wang Jianzhong (Chinese: 王建中) (1933–2016) was one of the leading Chinese composers of his day. A pianist and educator, many of his works were composed during the Cultural Revolution and combine Chinese folk music with the Western classical piano tradition.
Wang was born in Shanghai in 1933, and he began his piano study at the age of 10. His college training was at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music where he majored in composition and piano. After his graduation, he became a professor at the conservatory. During the 1970s he served as the composer-in-residence for the Central Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 1980s he served not only as a professor, but also associate chair and associate dean at the Conservatory.
Wang passed away in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2016.
