Mermaid swimming has gained popularity across the world, most recently in Johannesburg, South Africa. Between 50 and 100 people have picked up the aquatic sport at local schools like Merschool and MerSwim. Elsewhere, the swimming sport has found traction in China and the United States, with China scheduled to host the World Mermaid Championships in 2023. Advanced mermaid swimming requires techniques like underwater backflips, sculling and dolphin kicking.
