🎯 What is the difference between a Switch and a Sensor? A Switch tells you "Yes/No." A Sensor tells you "How Much."
In this kick-off episode for our new 10-part Sensors Series, we break down the entire landscape of industrial sensing. We cover the three main signal families (Voltage-generating, Current-generating, and Resistive), how to choose the right device for the job, and the "Signal Conditioning" tricks used to make tiny signals readable by a PLC.
In this lesson:
0:00 Intro: Switches vs Sensors
1:54 Voltage-Generating Sensors (Thermocouples & Mics)
2:13 Current-Generating Sensors (Photodiodes)
2:30 Resistive Sensors (Strain Gauges, RTDs)
2:54 Capacitance & Inductance Sensors (LVDT, Pressure)
4:08 Signal Conditioning: Amplifiers & Wheatstone Bridges
5:10 Selection Checklist: Accuracy vs Precision vs Response
6:03 Safety: Broken Wire Detection & Drift
6:47 Mini Lab: Real-World Sensor Demos
7:18 History Nugget: Thomas Seebeck's Discovery
The "Big 3" Sensor Families:
Potentiometric (Voltage): Creates its own voltage (e.g., Thermocouple).
Amperometric (Current): Creates its own current (e.g., Photodiode).
Resistive (Passive): Changes resistance; needs an external power source (e.g., RTD, Strain Gauge).
