While chasing one entangled seal, the OCN team kept finding more. One after another, seals trapped in fishing line and other ocean rubbish appeared. The plastic crisis is everywhere. Fortunately, the team came prepared with enough rescue nets and no entangled seal was left behind.
Fishing line is the most common entanglement these seals face, and with their ability to travel over 100km a day, they can pick them up anywhere. There are no “safe zones” left in the ocean.
We are grateful to have freed six seals today, but we need to focus on the ones without happy ending, the ones we missed.
