‘Future present: Uncertainty and resistance in a time of monsters’
The great Black American author James Baldwin once stated, “People who shut their eyes to reality simply invite their own destruction, and anyone who insists on remaining in a state of innocence long after that innocence is dead turns himself into a monster.” In confronting the monsters of our own making, we discover our place and purpose in the world. In this keynote, I will reflect on how to embrace uncertainty in a time of monsters. My central argument rests on the idea that hope and resistance are more productive than optimism and resilience in a world beset by polycrisis.
