Business owners must know ALL state tax deadlines and make sure that the requirements are met. Know when returns must be filed. And understand all deadlines imposed when participating in an audit, without regard to whether the audit is addressed internally or by a third party.
Plan ahead. Don't assume that is the return is due on the 20th of the month, that everything will go smoothly if you start preparing the return on the actual due date. Computer issues pop up, software issues and updates, questions about what to report, what is taxable, etc. can stop you in your tracks.
There is also the issue of sometimes the taxing authority wanting the return and payment to be submitted electronically the day before the actual state deadline or due date.
