Near modern Anyang in Henan province is an archaeological site that has transformed the understanding of ancient China, It contains the remains of the ancient city of Yin, the capital of the Shang dynasty for over 250 years.

Around 1300 BCE, King Pan Geng of the Shang dynasty moved his capital and ritual centre to a site on the Huan River, towards the northern border of his domain, This new city was located near present-day Anyang. Pan Geng decided to make the move after 15 years of careful consideration, and only after he had received approval from his oracles.

His new capital was named Yin, a name sometimes given to the shang dynasty itself from this point on. Before its founding, the Shang had changed their capital several times, but the dynasty would now rule China from Yin until its overthrow by the Zhou in 1046 BCE. Soon after this date, the city was abandoned and fell into decay, becoming known as Yinxu, meaning “Ruins of Yin”.

The city of Yin was rediscovered some oracle bones were traced back to their origins close to Anyang. Analysis of the inscriptions on these bones, completed in 1917, confirmed that Yin was an important Shang site. Initial archaeological work began along the banks of the Huan River in 1928 and soon uncovered an organized cluster of settlements, workshops, and burial grounds set around a political and ritual centre comprised of temples palaces, and a royal cemetery. Most of the buildings were elevated, built on rammed-earth platforms., and then 100,000 inhabitants as it's height.
