The Down East Bird Dawgs hosted the 2026 Down East Bird Dawgs Hot Stove Banquet and Kinston Professional Baseball Hall of Fame ceremony on February 27 at King’s Restaurant — and Neuse News was there to capture it all.
This annual event — now in its 26th or 27th year — continues to be one of the most unique traditions in Eastern North Carolina. As Bill Ellis said prior to the event, “I promise you there’s not many towns of 20,000 or less that will be hosting a hot stove banquet with professional athletes.”
2026 Kinston Professional Baseball Hall of Fame Inductee:
Ross Atkins — Wake Forest standout, former Kinston Indian, and current General Manager of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Lifetime Achievement Award:
James “Rabbit” Fulghum — honored for his lasting impact on baseball in Eastern North Carolina.
Team of the Year Recognition:
Kinston Lenoir 10U Angels — 2025 Dixie Softball World Series Runner-Up.
The evening also featured:
• Remarks from Down East Bird Dawgs leadership
• Frontier League Commissioner Steve Tahsler
• Local and regional baseball figures
• Silent auction items including autographed memorabilia
• Celebration of Kinston’s rich professional baseball history
