Watch live from Tanegashima Space Center in Japan as the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) prepares to launch its Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) spacecraft aboard an H3 rocket.

Scheduled for October 20, 2026, the mission aims to become the first to collect samples from Phobos, one of Mars' two moons, and return them to Earth. The spacecraft is expected to reach the Martian system in 2027, study Phobos and Deimos, and attempt sample collection before bringing the material back to Earth in 2031.

The mission aims to collect at least 10 grams of material from Phobos. Scientists hope the samples will help resolve a major planetary mystery: whether Mars' moons formed from debris produced by an ancient collision or are asteroids captured by Mars' gravity.

The mission includes international contributions from NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), France's CNES and Germany's DLR. It will also deploy the Idefix rover to investigate Phobos' surface ahead of sampling operations.
