Le Coq d'Or (The Golden Cockerel) is an opera by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, completed in 1907 and premiered posthumously in 1909. Based on a satirical fairy tale by Alexander Pushkin, the opera criticizes autocracy and imperialism through the story of a foolish tsar and a magical golden cockerel. Although Rimsky-Korsakov composed it during a time of political unrest following the 1905 Russian Revolution, the tsarist authorities delayed its performance due to its pointed allegory. The opera, with a libretto by Vladimir Belsky, was Rimsky-Korsakov's final work and stands out for its sharp wit, fantastical elements, and innovative orchestration, reflecting the composer’s late style and his commitment to artistic freedom.
