Tired of being a fly on a windshield when you go to pick up a puck?
Getting crushed into the boards because the defense knows exactly where you’re going?
In today’s episode of How to Build a Stride, Coach Zane breaks down a deceptive puck pick-up move designed to help you escape pressure and protect yourself along the boards.
We build off the punch turn we worked on a couple weeks ago—but now we’re taking it a step further by faking the punch turn. By selling the fake with your footwork and using a strong heel push, you can freeze the defender just long enough to grab the puck and get out clean.
🔥 What you’ll learn:
How to fake a punch turn to create separation
Using heel pushes to change direction explosively
Freezing defenders for a split second to avoid contact
Advanced progressions for higher-level players
This is a must-have skill for players who want to play faster, smarter, and safer in tight areas.
📍 Try it both directions
📍 Progress to double fakes as defenders adjust
📍 Focus on deception, not speed
