Maxtor MXT-540A Hard drive sounds

Описание: The MXT-540A, first appearing in 1993, would be Maxtor's performance IDE drive offering and compete with drives such as Conner's CP30544 and Micropolis's 2105A. The drive's 6,300 RPM spindle speed would be its most unique and defining feature and be unmatched by any IDE drive until Seagate released their Medalist Pro 4520, 6530, and 9140 line of 7,200 RPM drives on October 13, 1997.

Drives using this spindle speed (or similar) were few, at least around the time the MXT-540 was in production. Two other examples of drive families running at around the MXT-540's spindle speed were Hitachi's DK326C series (6,300 RPM SCSI) from 1994, and HP's C2486A, C2488A, & C2490A series (6,400 RPM SCSI) from 1995.

According to the Volume 7, Number 22 (May 31, 1993) issue of MacWEEK, ClubMac was selling the MXT-540 (presumably the SCSI version) for $899 ($1,876 in 2023 dollars). However, according to page 195 of the September 1993 issue of Byte Magazine, the MXT-540AL variant had a sticker price of a whopping $1,077 ($2,250 in 2023 dollars).

This particular example came out of an IBM PS/ValuePoint type 6387, model 466DX2/T-X91, originally announced on October 18, 1993. Maxtor didn't put a date on the labels of the MXT-540 drives they sent to IBM, but a chip on the PCB with a 9335 date code is shown, dating this drive to "August-September 1993 (35th week)." This info supersedes the "August 1993 (31st week)" shown on the title card (the date of the PCB's IDE connector) since I discovered this after making the video.

This drive is healthy from a media standpoint with no bad or reallocated sectors. However, the drive doesn't start up 100% of the time, and I don't believe it's due to any kind of stiction.
