In this episode Christine discusses Quebec’s ban on prayer rooms in public schools. In April, Quebec education Minister ordered a ban on prayer rooms after learning that some schools were permitting students to gather on school property for prayer. Those cases involved Muslim students. The education Minister has said that permitting prayer rooms in public schools runs counter to Quebec’s policy of laicity – official secularism. And that students who want to pray should do so – to quote – “discreetly and silently”.

The ban was challenged by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the National Council of Canadian Muslims. The full merits of that challenge will be heard in the fall. Is the Quebec ban on prayer rooms for students unconstitutional? And what does “neutrality” of religion actually mean?
The CCF will be seeking to intervene in the case.
In this episode Christine mentions her interview with Derek Ross of Christian Legal Fellowship and Harini Sivalangam with the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. You can view that interview here: • A Ban on All Religious Activities in Quebe...
