If you aren’t aware of what’s going on, then basically, after this set was revealed, The German Peace Society denounced LEGO and this set. The reason they did that was that even though LEGO’s depiction doesn’t contain any weapons and is supposed to be a search and rescue helicopter, in reality, the V-22 is mainly used by the military.
The German Peace society went on to say that LEGO cooperates with arms companies and that they plan to hold protests outside 3 different LEGO Stores in Germany, including the large Berlin store.
LEGO responded to this with a short statement, saying, “The Lego Technic Bell Boeing Osprey V-22 was designed to highlight the important role the aircraft plays in search and rescue efforts.
While our set depicts a rescue version of the plane, the aircraft is predominantly used by the military. We have a long-standing policy not to create sets that feature military vehicles and in this case, we have not adhered to our own internal guidelines.
As a result, we are currently reviewing our plans to launch this product on August 1st”.
Following this, the product listing for this set on The LEGO Store was removed and just a couple of days later, The LEGO Group issued another statement officially canceling it. It reads. The LEGO Technic Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey was designed to highlight the important role the aircraft plays in search and rescue efforts. While the set clearly depicts how a rescue version of the plane might look, the aircraft is only used by the military. We have a long-standing policy not to create sets that feature real military vehicles, so it has even decided not to proceed with the launch of this product.
We appreciate that some fans who were looking forward to this set may be disappointed, but we believe that it’s important to ensure that we uphold our brand values.
There are going to be some stare that has already received stock, but LEGO Stores should never receive stock. Our sales teams have been in touch with their customers as well.
Going off this and LEGO’s statements, it seems as though LEGO was more or less bullied into canceling this set’s release. When I read the statements or the first time, I thought it seemed a little odd that just now, after this set has been designed revealed and even stock was being sent to stores that LEGO has only just released that this doesn’t adhere to their guidelines. I must admit, I think adhering to the guidelines and not. But surely, when The LEGO Technic team came up with the concept of a search and rescue V-22 they had that discussion of does this fit within our guidelines. So I personally don’t buy this whole we’ve just realized it doesn’t fit within our guidelines.
But anyway, some lucky few people were fortunate enough to find this set and after building it and having it a while, multiple reports came out that some of the cogs on the inner framework were being damaged. This isn’t just a 1 off the case as multiple people are saying the same thing and even in Brickset’s review, they confirmed that the same thing was happening to their model.
LEGO has acknowledged it and said that they’ll be making a statement in a few days.
