The beauty of Excel is that we just need to apply a function for only one record in the entire database and the moment we copy and paste it down it applies to the complete data. Sometimes we need to change this property of Excel, as we can’t, so Excel has given us an option of freezing any cell reference by adding a “$” before the cell reference. For any Excel user, it's very important to know where to put the “$” sign. Excel facilitates 3 types of cell references. Let’s understand them one by one.

1). Relative Reference: This is a default reference in Excel. Whenever we refer to a cell and copy the same reference and paste it in any other cell, the cell reference changes accordingly. This is the heart of Excel.

2). Absolute Reference: Putting “$” sign before column and row is known as an absolute reference e.g. “$A$1”. At times we would like to keep a cell reference or a range static, there we use such reference.

3). Mixed Reference: Putting “$” sign either before a column or before row termed as mixed reference. When we would like to deliberately want the reference to be changed either side then this reference is to be used.
