Instability is particularly acute in the vast sub-Saharan region, where the most serious and persistent crises are concentrated. Three areas are particularly affected: West Africa (in the Sahel belt, which includes Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger), Central Africa (with the Central African Republic, Chad, Sudan, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo), and the Horn of Africa (with Somalia).
The "Coup Belt" in West and Central Africa The journalistic and geopolitical term "Coup Belt" refers to an area of Africa affected by a series of military coups since 2020, particularly in the Sahel and the central-western part of the continent. This term was coined in 2021 by Nigerian journalist Festus Adedayo to describe the coups that took place in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea in the same year, and has since been extended to all military coups in the region since 2020. The countries currently involved include Burkina Faso, Chad, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Sudan.
