It’s Monday on the Mean Girl—my 1981 70' Hatteras—and it’s time to get to work. So I’m calling in reinforcements... Jim the Boat Whisperer is here! He’s a Detroit Diesel mechanic, boat systems expert, and part-time contortionist (seriously, watching him fold his 6'2" frame into tiny crawl spaces is WILD).

This old Hatteras is full of mysteries—and without any guidance from the previous owners, we’re figuring it out the hard way. But Jim’s seen it all, and together we’re slowly decoding the chaos one system at a time.

If you’ve been following along, you’ll remember how my first few days aboard were rough:

🚿 No running water
🚽 Toilets stopped flushing

So today’s episode is basically Boat Plumbing 101:

Located both the 110V and DC water pumps

Found hidden switches (why are they always hidden?)

Tackled the infamous Galley Maid toilets

Checked sump and bilge pumps

Did a deep dive into the failing AC system (again)

This episode is packed with real-life refit action as we start working our way through Shay la Vie’s systems. There’s no sugar-coating it—refitting a yacht is messy, sweaty, and full of surprises. But this is the dream, and we’re making it happen one step at a time.
