When I received a message from the musicians of the Rotterdam-based Lenvay String Ensemble telling: "... , We love your 'Snow' !", then I've decided that it should Snow in Rotterdam.
In this way, on your screen is a fragment from that afternoon of the premiere, in which the Lenvay String Ensemble proves that this version is just as expressive, lyrical, and fairy-tale-like as the original version, 'Snow' for a cappella choir.
This piece is inspired by the eponymous poem by the Ukrainian poet Dmytro Pavlychko (UA, 1929 – 2023).
The narrative immediately touched me at once and aroused a remarkable imagination; it stood out from hundreds of other poems I had read on the subject of winter. It's because of the casual play of contrasts, the subtle references to childhood or the general tenderness (found mainly in women's poetry) that I appreciate so much.
'Snow', the poem:
From a stork's nest in winter
Snow flies down like a white bird.
It flaps its wings above me,
Disappears in the blue....
I keep my eyes peeled for him,
And he falls from the heights,
Like a shawl with a white fringe,
It falls on the dry thistle.
And then he flies up
And his look (at me) burns me,
My white angel, white angel,
touches gently with his wings...
My wingless shoulder.
