Summary
==============================
The linkage between two mononucleotides consists of a phosphate group linked to two sugars. It is called a phosphodiester bond because phosphoric acid has been joined to two alcohols (the hydroxyl groups on the two sugars) by an ester linkage on both sides. The figure shows the phosphodiester bond in DNA.
Short chains consisting of up to approximately 30 nucleotides linked together are called oligonucleotides; longer chains are called polynucleotides.
