Summary: This recitative narrates the dramatic moment of Peter's denial of Jesus, fulfilling Jesus's prophecy. The Evangelist's narrative style is direct and poignant, building the scene of Peter's fear and betrayal. After denying Jesus three times, Peter hears the rooster crow and realizes the gravity of his actions, leading to his bitter tears and the emotional aria that follows.

Petrus aber saß draußen im Palast; und eine Magd trat zu ihm und sprach: Du warst auch mit dem Jünger aus Galiläa! Er leugnete aber vor ihnen allen und sprach: Ich weiß nicht, was du sagst. Und als er zur Tür hinausging, sah ihn eine andere, und sprach zu denen, die da waren: Dieser war auch mit Jesus von Nazareth! Und er leugnete abermals mit einem Schwur: Ich kenne des Menschen nicht! Und über eine kleine Weile traten hinzu, die da standen, und sprachen zu Petrus: Wahrlich, du bist auch einer von ihnen; denn deine Sprache verrät dich! Da fing er an, sich zu verfluchen und zu schwören: Ich kenne des Menschen nicht! Und alsbald krähte der Hahn. Da dachte Petrus an das Wort, das Jesus zu ihm gesagt hatte: Ehe der Hahn kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen. Und ging hinaus und weinte bitterlich.

English Translation:

But Peter sat outside in the palace; and a maid came to him and said: You were also with the disciple from Galilee! But he denied it before them all and said: I know not what you say. And when he went out to the door, another saw him, and said to those who were there: This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth! And he again denied it with an oath: I do not know the man! And after a little while came up to him they that stood by, and said to Peter: Verily, you are also one of them; for your speech betrays you! Then he began to curse and swear: I know not the man! And immediately the cock crowed. Then Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said to him: Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

Aria - Alto: "Erbarme dich, mein Gott, um meiner Zähren Willen"

Summary: This is one of the most famous and beautiful arias in all of Western music. Sung by the alto soloist, it is a deeply emotional plea for mercy. The music's expressive power, conveyed through the long, flowing melodic lines and the poignant accompaniment of a solo violin, perfectly captures the profound sorrow and remorse of Peter after he has denied Jesus.
