Lake Erie catfish having tough time in warm Western Basin waters

It's sure been hot this summer, and a lot of people have hit Lake Erie's beaches to cool off. But the water there is hot too, especially in the Western Basin in and around Marblehead.
"We got really hot temperatures, and the water warmed really fast," Eric Weimer, fisheries biologist with the Ohio Division of Wildlife, said.
According to Weimer, those high temperatures depleted dissolved oxygen in the water, and it hit some fish like a freight train.
Across the Western Basin, thousands of fish have died, especially catfish.
"It exacerbated spawning stress that these fish normally go under," Weimer explained, "and it probably caused a few more fish to die."
