How To Stay Warm During Astrophotography

Описание: Cold nights can look miserable. But when winter skies clear, they can also offer some of the most beautiful and productive conditions for astrophotography.

In this video, I share how I stay warm during long sessions in freezing temperatures — including what I’ve learned about layering systems, insulated boots, gloves, and base layers after years of feeling permanently cold during winter shoots. Astrophotography is a mostly static activity, and once the gear is set up, you’re often just standing still for hours. That changes how you need to dress.

This particular night, I spent nine hours outside in minus ten degrees Celsius, capturing Orion setting over a frozen Swedish landscape while running multiple setups. Staying warm wasn’t just about comfort — it was about being able to focus, avoid mistakes, and actually finish the project.

I also share one of the images from that night, including a two-by-two mosaic of the Orion Nebula and the Running Man Nebula captured during first light with the Dwarf Mini.

Whether you’re dealing with icy winter nights, imaging at high altitude, or shooting in deserts where temperatures drop quickly after sunset, staying warm means you can stay longer — and enjoy the experience more.
