Steel Building Chord Brace at Double Purlin or Girt Install - How To DIY Steel Building

Chord braces are required to brace the inside flange of your columns and roof trusses of the web-truss framing system. The locations required will be shown as dashed lines on your W drawings.

Your columns and roof trusses will have small tabs welded onto the inside flange at each location that a chord brace is required.

Your chord brace quantity and lengths will be identified on the Building Shipment Summary page of your shipment list

The hardware required to install your chord braces will be identified on the Truss Hardware List of your shipment list.

For the attachment of the chord brace to the column or roof truss you will use a bolt and nut.

Ensure your columns are straight, and your roof trusses are vertical and plumb before installing your chord braces. Attach one end of your chord brace to the angle clip using a nut and bolt. Then attach chord braces to the truss using another bolt and nut and tighten. Bend the chord brace to a 45-degree angle from the truss to where the angle clip rests on the flanges of your double purlin and girt, and attach using (2) Tek screws into the purlin or girt.

For endwall columns or roof trusses, you will only have ONE side of the truss that requires chord braces even though you will have pre-welded tabs on both sides of the column or roof truss. The chord brace on your endwall frames will be installed towards the inside of your building.

For interior frames you will install a chord brace on each side of the column or roof truss, out to the purlin or girt.

Continue installing your chord braces until all braces required are in place.
